Why GFRC for Fireplace Mantels?

Solid stone and cast stone mantels are heavy — a full surround can run 400–800 lbs, requiring structural support and a multi-person installation crew. GFRC produces an equivalent profile at 8–15 lbs per square foot of face area. A complete GFRC mantel surround typically weighs 60–120 lbs total — two people, a few hours, no crane. The material is non-combustible, holds paint and integral color well, and can replicate limestone, travertine, sandstone, or any custom texture.

Mantel Styles

We produce mantels across the full range of architectural styles.

  • Classical — fluted pilasters, Doric or Ionic capitals, dental frieze, paneled fascia
  • Traditional — simple tapered legs, flat shelf, minimal ornament
  • Modern — clean returns, no molding, thin shelf, raw concrete or smooth plaster finish
  • Rustic / Farmhouse — rough-hewn wood-look texture, board-formed, or exposed aggregate
  • Mediterranean — arched opening, carved keystone, limestone-look acid wash
  • Custom — anything your designer draws; we build the mold in-house

Standard Dimensions

Most residential mantels run 48" to 72" wide with a shelf depth of 6" to 9". Firebox opening height ranges from 30" to 42" for standard hearths. We produce to custom dimensions — oversized mantels for great rooms, scaled-down versions for bedroom fireplaces, and double-sided designs for see-through hearths.

Finishes

Integral color is mixed into the GFRC face coat — the mantel doesn't need to be painted. Standard finishes include smooth (paintable), sandblast (light aggregate texture), acid wash (limestone appearance), and custom aggregate. We can also apply a skim coat of white cement for a pure plaster look. Color-match samples available on request.

Installation

GFRC mantels install over a standard wood or metal stud framing system. We supply shop drawings showing the framing layout, connection hardware locations, and clearances from the firebox opening. For gas inserts, we coordinate firebox opening dimensions with the appliance manufacturer's rough opening requirements. Most installations complete in 4–8 hours with two people.

Lions Precast Approach

Every mantel we produce is built from a fiberglass mold cast in our Fresno shop. For repeat profiles, we maintain the mold for re-orders. For custom designs, we build the mold from your architect's drawings or designer's sketch — typically within 1–2 weeks of drawing approval. We deliver assembled and numbered throughout California.
